The Story of Phnom Pros & Phnom Srey

The Land of Legends, Nature, and Our Beloved Monkeys

In the peaceful heart of Kampong Cham Province, two gentle hills rise from the land, watching over forests, temples, and the daily rhythm of life. These hills are known as Phnom Pros and Phnom Srey — places where legend meets reality, and where nature continues to tell its story through every living creature.

For generations, these hills have been more than just landscapes. They are symbols of Khmer culture, wisdom, and tradition — and today, they are also home to the monkeys you see on our 3B Animals channel.

🏞️ A Legend Passed Through Time

Long ago, according to ancient Khmer folklore, there lived a powerful and intelligent queen named Srey Ayuthia. She was unlike others — strong, independent, and wise. Because of her strength, no man dared to ask for her hand in marriage.

So, she changed tradition.

From that moment, women would be the ones to propose to men.

But not everyone agreed. Many women in the kingdom wished to return to the old custom. So, a challenge was made between men and women — one that would shape tradition forever.

👉 Each side would build a hill during one single night.
👉 Whoever built the taller hill before sunrise would win.
👉 The losing side would follow the winner’s rule of marriage.

The men worked with strength and speed.
The women worked with patience and clever thinking.

As the night grew late, the women used a smart trick — they hung a lantern high in a tree, making it look like the sun was rising.

The men, believing morning had come, stopped their work.

But the women continued.

And when the real sunrise arrived…
👉 The women’s hill stood taller.

That is why today:

Phnom Srey (Woman Hill) is higher

Phnom Pros (Man Hill) is lower

And in Cambodian culture, men propose to women

This story is not just about winning — it is about wisdom, patience, and the power of strategy over strength.

🏛️ Sacred Hills of Faith and Peace

Over time, both hills became sacred places.

At the top of each hill, peaceful pagodas were built, where monks live and pray. Visitors climb the steps to seek blessings, light incense, and find calm in the quiet atmosphere.

During important Cambodian festivals like:

Khmer New Year

Pchum Ben

People gather here to honor their ancestors, pray for happiness, and reconnect with tradition.

The air feels different on these hills — softer, calmer, and full of meaning.
